This week, the historic King’s Theatre plays host to the Russian State Ballet of Siberia performing Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. The uber-tough ballet troupe is actually performing three different ballets all in one week, performing twice in a 24-hour period on matinee days.
Wednesday’s matinee of Swan Lake was full of graceful artistry and romantic elements, courtesy of the poignant expressive interpretation of the hard-working dancers in the Russian State Ballet of Siberia. Artistic director Sergei Bobrov was a former principal dancer and choreographer at the topnotch Bolshoi Ballet, whose guidance is clearly channeled into the dancers’ skills. Watching the corps de ballet synchronize fluttering limbs, like a flock of birds, is a lovely sight to behold.
I had forgotten how sentimental and lovely Tchaikovsky’s famous masterpiece really is since the swan figure is so cliched that it often becomes satirized. For instance, I’ve seen men attempt hilarious, athletic swans more times than I really want to remember.
Odette/Odile, the white swan played by Maria Kuimova, deserves kudos for her masterful footwork.
Don’t miss the beautiful dancing divas as they swoop through their breakneck performance schedule!
