Humza Yousaf: Learning languages will open Glasgow to the world
THIS week, the Scottish Parliament debated the benefits of learning languages and ways in which the opportunities for young people to learn languages can be improved.
The Scottish Government want young people to learn two languages in addition to their mother tongue at school. This plan will be rolled out across Scotland over the course of two parliaments and children will start to learn a second language from P1.
The benefits of language learning are wide-ranging - it can increase mental flexibility and learning capacity and improve academic achievement.
Walking down the streets of Glasgow, you'll hear people speaking Polish, Urdu, Chinese and Scots. We live in such a diverse city that learning languages should be promoted.
