GLASGOW enjoys a reputation as a friendly and welcoming place.
It's often well earned, and surely we all know someone who came here for work or to study, or just out of curiosity, and decided to stay and make a life here.
It's a reputation we would do well to cherish-but it's also a reputation that's under threat.
Like most places in Scotland and the UK, the hateful attitudes of the far-right have not prospered in the ballot boxes of Glasgow.
But just like those other places we're now seeing racism and hatred spill out into street politics once more.

"I DISAPPROVE of what you say but defend to the death your right to say it."
This famous quote - written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall and published in 1906 under the pseudonym Stephen G.Tallentyre - is a fundamental bedrock of our democratic right to freedom of speech.
It is something I believe in passionately, as do most Scots.
For example, I disagree with everything the British National Party say and stand for but I have never advocated for them to be banned in the UK.
I was always taught that it is better to defeat bad speech with good speech.
