2014 Commonwealth Games not yet a bogey

By Scott Marley on Nov 19, 09 12:57 PM in

Glasgow's 2014 Commonwealth Games is hoped to be the biggest event the city has ever seen.

But organisers have admitted this week that the cost has shot up by £81million, taking the total bill to £454 million for taxpayers.

Are Glaswegians still behind the Games despite the shortfall?

Loni Chambers, 22, a pharmacist from the southside, said: "I'm not surprised the Games are over budget - most of these things are underestimated.

"But I think they're still worth bringing to Glasgow.

It will be good for the city having different people from different cultures coming here."

Arlene McQueen, 22, a student from the west of the city, said: "I'm still looking forward to them coming to Glasgow. It will bring a lot of tourists and be good for the economy.

"I don't really like sports but I would probably go for the buzz. I'm not surprised it's gone over budget."

Xiao Cui, 23, a student from Tradeston, said: "It will bring tourists and money to the city. But I don't think the Games are worth having. I'm surprised they're over budget."

But Katrine Reedik, an 29-year-old student and mum from Gorbals, said she wasn't surprised the cost was up.

She said: "The Commonwealth Games are still worth bringing to Glasgow.

"I would go to see some of the sports, especially the riding and maybe the football."

John Boyd, 36, is a construction worker from the west end and said he is out of work for the first time in eight years, despite the extra cash flooding into the games.

He said: "I'm surprised the games have gone over budget.

The money certainly is not trickling down to people born and brought up in Glasgow. There's apparently not enough money to pay me to work."

And Liam McPake, a 53-year-old from Gartcosh who works for Glasgow Community Safety Service said: "Personally I don't think the Games are worth bringing here. It's too much for the taxpayers to be expected to pay.

"I read that Glasgow City Council is cutting back on jobs and schools, to pay for the Games.

"It's a short-term buzz for a long-term pain."
